The Summer Wardrobe Gaps You're Probably Overlooking (And How to Fix Them)

Let’s be honest—summer sneaks up on us. One minute it’s spring layering season, and the next, it’s full-on sweat-through-your-bra weather. And if you're anything like most of my clients, you’ve probably pulled out your summer bin only to realize… your warm-weather wardrobe is missing things. Like, a lot of things.

Here are the most common summer wardrobe gaps I see—and how to fill them so you’re not left panic-scrolling at 10 p.m. for something to wear to this weekend’s BBQ.

Your Summer Wardrobe

1. Mini or Midi Dresses

These are your summer workhorses. You want a mini or midi that’s flirty but functional—something you can throw on with sneakers for errands, or dress up with a strappy sandal for date night. If your closet is missing a go-to mini, now’s the time to add one. Think cotton poplin, breezy linen, or even a fun print if you’re feeling bold.

Style tip: Add a belt if you want to define your waist. If not, embrace the shift silhouette for max comfort and ease.

2. Mini Skirts / Elevated Shorts

We want something more elevated than our ripped mini skirt or shorts that honestly should have been retired many years ago. While denim should be a staple also think about the other fabrics- like a chic pair of linen shorts. Pair one with a tucked-in tee and flat sandals for a casual, cool look, or throw on a structured tank and a denim jacket for a touch of polish. These are going to be worn on repeat all Summer, so really look at what you have and assess if your options look like they're meant to be beachside or could you wear those shorts to a nicer lunch?

What to look for: Denim minis, linen wrap styles, or something in a fun color that feels fresh for the season.

3. Maxi Skirts

The most underrated hero of summer. A flowy maxi skirt instantly makes you feel put together—even when you’re just wearing it with a tank and flip flops. It’s the ultimate solution for days when you want coverage but still need to breathe.

Pro move: Look for one with a comfortable waistband so you’re not adjusting all day. Pair with a fitted top to balance the volume.

4. T-Shirts / Tanks (That Actually Fit + Flatter)

If your tees are stretched, stained, or you wouldn't wear it out… it’s time for an upgrade. Tees are the backbone of summer style, but they should still make you feel stylish. Think fresh whites, soft heathers, and interesting necklines that work with your shorts and skirts.

Go-to cuts: Slightly cropped (but not belly-baring), crewneck or V-neck, fitted but not tight.

5. Elevated Tops

I'm not talking about your skin tight going out top- I'm talking what are you wearing to happy hour- that feels chic and elevated but not overly dressed up. You have dinner plans and it's middle of July- we want to look chic and stylish but also realistic. A beautiful top that breaths well and can wear to work and then transition to dinner- that's where these tops come in and many of us simply don't own them. They're SO helpful simply because of the versatility.

6. Light Wash Jeans

Might seem obvious- but it's not. A chic pair of ligh-wash jeans to get you through the Summer is a must and when you know how to style your wardrobe with versatility you'll see how these pieces can then be reworn in the Fall.

Go-to washes:  Light-wash denim, shades of pastel, ecru vs. stark white- much easier to wear in the cooler months for rewearing purposes.

7. Layering Pieces

There are ofcourse cooler Summer nights- and many times you either have a think sweater from the Winter or an oversized sweatshirt. We want cotton sweaters, crotchet sweaters, a great denim jacket. These are the pieces that you can throw over your shoulders and if the temperature does drop you didn't ruin your outfit.

8. Matching Sets

One of the most underrated categories. Truthfully you only need one or two but having a good matching set- one that's casual but also stylish- could be worn to the bbq, lunch, all over on the weekend is a staple outfit! It's perfect for mix and matching and also jus that no brainer outfit but somehow always more interested than just a dress.

The best part I combined all of the categories and put them into this guide.
